At five
She learnt the flavour
Of salt water.
The taste exploded
Across her tongue
And lingered on her lips.
Her mother warned her,
Salt water was deadly,
And pulled her to the shore.

At Seven
She learnt the sensation
Of trembling lips
As she tried
To hold the tears in.
The helpless flutter
Was imprinted on her
Until one day
It would spread,
Until her whole body shook.

At twelve
She learnt the sight
Of violets blooming on her skin.
The flowers grew
And waned
Like the eternal cycles
Of the waxing moon.
Eventually the single bloom
Would become three
Would become many
Would become a garden
Of horrible beauty.

At thirteen
She learnt the sound
Of her name
Slurred and liquified,
Twisted and broken
On another's lips
Moving far too close
To her own.

At thirteen
The tremors broke
And she tasted salt water
Once more.
An ocean of her own making.

At thirteen
She understood
Her mothers warning.

At eighteen
She fled.
Her lips trembled
As she told him.
Her hands shook
As she packed.
Her knees gave out
Once she was around the corner.

At eighteen
She decided
That she was worth more
Than what he made of her.

At eighteen
She signed the contract
Of the lease she'd been saving for
Since she learned it was possible
To leave.

At eighteen
The ocean began to recede.
