Literature Text

Can you see me?
I'm the person you choose to ignore.
The waitress you never bother to look at.
I'm the girl sitting on the bench staring at her hands,
The girl who always looks at the ground.

I'm that person you just walked into,
The person behind the glass,
The person who missed the last train home.
I'm that person sitting at the back of the bus,
The person who never really has anywhere to go.

I'm that person you don't talk to.
Just the girl staring out the window.
The girl that's simply sitting there.

I'm the girl with the long hair.
A face in a crowd.
A name on a list.
Do you see me?

Because if you could see me
You would see my slumped shoulders.
And you would see my lowered eyes.
But you wouldn't see my acceptance.
You wouldn't see me don't back down.
You would see the way I smile
And work hard despite the frowns.
You would see the way I write on my hands,
And look to them for inspiration.
You would see the way I walk with a purpose,
Despite knowing the train has already left.
You would see how sometimes
I just smile for no reason.

And I do smile.
Because now I can.
Because now I'm free from all those chains.
Because now the sun feels warm on my skin.
Because now work has a touch of liberation in it.
Because now having no destination in mind
Isn't the same as having no where to go.
Do you see me yet?
Because you will.
One day.
Comments welcome.

22/02/14 Edit.
Made a few changes, redid a couple of lines, moved things around a bit. Overall I think it's stronger now but let me know what you guys think.
